The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, (Isaiah 61:1 NIV)
In 2013, I returned to Ecuador after nine years. I returned to visit one of my brothers in one of the worst prisons in the country. I returned believing that I could go to Ecuador and return to the States the same way I left.
But God! I experienced humility like never before. I witnessed love and faith and hope in midst of devastation.
In a moment of realization, I thought: These are my people.
What I thought was a visit, became confirmation of the calling God had for my life. Similar to those who grow up in the United States and return to their hoods to do activism, start organizations, serve and work along with the communities, God called me to return to the country that birthed my family to teach, coach, speak and to work along nationals and the Covenant Church of Ecuador. I’ll include that God is continuously stirring up gifts within me to be used for the Glory of His Kingdom.
I am spending the next two weeks in Chicago. I am being prepared by an equipped, and gifted team that cares about the world and has served countries not their own for 18, 25, and 32 years! I will be learning. I will be among other missionaries with a similar calling as mine. Most importantly, I will let God lead me into doing the work that He has set out for me, with gratitude and joy knowing that anywhere he leads me, I may never return the same.
