Acts 9:

10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision,“Ananias!”

“Yes, Lord,” he answered.

11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”

13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”

15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

There’s a lot of controversy, primarily in the Christian community as to whether Kirk Franklin is being Christ-like by working with Kanye West. I don’t know what is in either of their hearts. I certainly do not know God’s ways or thoughts, for His are higher than mine. What I do know is that we often underestimate God’s power. He will split seas for us and we will still wonder how we will eat the next day. Selah.

What I do know is that God meets us at our lowest and chooses us among the least. What I do know is that Jesus Christ is the ultimate restorer and redeemer. What I do know is that he wants ALL of us to come home to Him, regardless of our sin, regardless of our doubts. I also know that God used Saul, later named Paul: the man who killed, jailed, and persecuted all believers. He HATED Christians to then become one. Hmm.

However, it didn’t just take one experience for Saul. In fact I believe it was a test of faith for the believers that surrounded Saul. Think about it. Just as Jesus blinded Saul, he could’ve opened his eyes for him, but no. He chose to use Ananias, a believer, to go and minister to his brother Saul. I believe this was for Ananias’s own heart. This was for God to demonstrate reconciliation between human beings. Can you feel Ananias’s heart? Can you imagine what was going through his mind?

13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”

Ananias is speaking to GOD as if God has not seen, heard, and allowed Saul to do all these horrific things to His people. Can we say Kanye West had authority from the enemy to blaspheme God’s name? Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. As believers, don’t we believe God is more powerful than evil  spiritual forces? If I was Ananias, I would love to think I would react with more faith, but I probably would’ve said something like “Lord, nobody is going to believe I actually love you, and follow you and want to serve you if I go to this man, plus I’ll probably end up in jail!” Hopefully I still would’ve gone though, just as Ananias did.

If I say I believe in the living God, the one who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and call myself a Christian then I need to believe that God will continue to work in the lives of prisoners, rapists, murderers, blasphemers, thieves, drug addicts, atheists, ISIS, America, come on now!

With all my heart, I hope that God is using Kirk Franklin like He used Ananias. My bigger hope is that God’s sovereignty, His grace and love will be revealed in Kanye West’s life. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE IMPACT if Kanye West surrenders his all to God? Can you imagine healing and restoration taking place in that man’s life? Can you imagine the testimony?! Can you imagine how many other lives may be saved if Kanye West became a new creature in the Lord?

If Ananias did not go to Saul and OBEY God, we would not have 12 arguably 13 books of the bible today. Hmmm. Maybe the other Christians and their doubts were the reason that Paul was appointed to preach to the gentiles. I’m glad Ananias went when God said “GO!”. Aren’t you? Truth is, if Ananias didn’t go, God could’ve have used someone else who was willing. If Kirk Franklin didn’t ‘Go’, God could’ve used someone else willing.

15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

It is God who chooses His instruments. Kanye West is a man with broken pieces, with sin, with hurt and pain, with desperate needs. He is known for his ego and being a little ‘off’. But none of it is a challenge for God. It may be a challenge for us to accept him, but never a challenge for God. If this is a publicity stunt, then so be it and may God have mercy. But if it’s real? Oh man! Honestly, if you are a declared believer in Christ and are angry about this situation ask yourself, “where is my hope?”. Is it that you will be right about Kirk Franklin being in the “wrong”, or that Kanye West is really seeking help and healing, seeking God, and that he may have a mighty testimony that will lead others to Christ? Let God be God. May His will be done.
